Virtual Private Network Performance Factors

Before you can start to discuss the factors that affect the performance of a virtual private network it is important to understand just what exactly a virtual private network or VPN is. VPNs are used within companies as a private communications network or for several companies and organizations to use as public network for communication. VPNs are a way for organizations and companies to connect their local phone and IT systems together in a single enterprise-wide network with an efficient and flexible system.

Companies choose to use VPNs for two reasons because of their low cost and the flexibility options they provide. Typically VPNs can be obtained through the public internet or by a private IP network. No matter which VPN a company selects there are several factors that can help increase the performance of the network.

The number one cause of a decrease in performance is by internet traffic. Therefore, before going out and purchasing a bandwidth upgrade which can be costly to run depending on the size and income of your business, you should look into what is causing the traffic increase. It may be that a large chunk of your traffic is coming from employee personal use. For this you can change your internet usage policy, limit the number of computer users or set a specific time when employees can browse the internet. These options will help limit traffic and keep your VPN performance high.

However, another leading cause of decreased performance is a software bug. If this still isn't the cause then perhaps you should look into the network server and see if there is a problem with the performance or capacity. Often times the supplier of the services will offer companies a service to investigate performance and plan a course of action to correct the issue.
