Managed Security Services Providers Survey

According the recent research, Virtual Private Networking Services is fast expanding and is projected to touch $29 billion by the year 2009. Most of the service revenue has come from the site to site(S2S) VPN's. Remote Access (RA) VPN's have just been around 23 percent of the market share.

Delivering a secure business connection is of paramount importance and the service providers are bending over each other to do just that. Managed Security service providers view VPN as a lucrative business opportunity. This is because of the increased integration of the internet with daily office business. Private Networks have migrated to the virtual inter-office connections. Off-site employees use the internet to connect to the office site. Travelers, tele-worlers, mobile workers have all used authentication and secure protocols like IPSec of the VPN to send and receive data.

Managed VPN services include installation of the VPN gateways and devices, management, monitoring, updates and routine maintenance. The tunnel usage is monitored for security events. This year's survey shows that both S2S and RA VPN did not receive the required expansion they were hoping for; instead technology has become another important factor.

IPSec VPN revenue continues to decline as MPLS, MPLA/IPSec and SSL are gaining ground. MPLS does not offer cryptographic protection but use IPsec for the first and last leg of connection. IKE v2 is another improved key exchange that is mostly supported. SSL VPN's is easier for RA VPN deployment and present a threat to the other forms as there is a shift toward services that support SSLv3.

Platforms and protocol thus decides the choice for the VPN service chosen. Yet the provider's processes and the service level agreements are important offerings for the service.
