WAN

WAN is the abbreviation of Wide Area Network. It refers to a network which uses a high speed and long distance communication technology for connecting computers over long distances. In other words, it is a geographically dispersed telecommunication network. It is a much broader telecommunication structure from a local area network or LAN.

It can be either privately owned or rented. But the term is used to refer mostly for using public networks. The most well-known example for WAN is the internet. WANs are generally used for connecting various LANs together. It facilitates users and computers in one location to communicate with the users and computers in some other location.

Many WANs are private and they are usually built for one particular location. Some others are built by internet service providers and the connection is provided from one organization's LAN to the internet. Moreover, WANs are built using leased lines. At the every end of the leased line , a router is connected to the LAN on one side and a hub within the WAN on the other .
