TCP/IP

TCP / IP refers to the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). It is a virtual circuit protocol which is one of the core protocols of the internet protocol suite. With the use of TCP, applications on networked hosts can establish connections to one another over which data can be exchanged. The protocol also guarantees consistent and reliable delivery of the data from the encoder to the decoder.

TCP can also differentiate data for multiple connections by concurrent applications running on the same host. For instance, web server and e-mail server. TCP also supports many popular application protocols and resulting applications of the internet like World Wide Web, e-mail, secure shell.

In the Internet Protocol Suite, TCP is the layer in the middle of internet protocol (IP) below it and an application above it. Most of the applications often require reliable pipe - like connections to each other. On the other hand IP will not provide schemes like that but only best effort delivery.
