LAN

LAN is the abbreviation of local area network. It is a local computer network for communication between various computers. It is in particular used to connect computers and word processors and other electronic office equipments in order to create a proper communication system between offices. As it is evident from its name, it covers a local area like school, college, office or home.

A local area network may usually serve a few users like two or three users, for instance, a home network. It may also serve thousands of users like in an FDDI network. Some of the major local area technologies are ethernet, token ring and FDDI.

Ethernet is the most commonly used LAN technology. FDDI is at times used as backbone LAN that interconnects Ethernet or Token Ring LANs. A set of application programs can be easily kept on the LAN server. Users can download it once and run it from their local hard disk itself.
