Transport Layer Security

Transport Layer Security (TLS) refers to a cryptographic protocol that provides secure communication over the internet. It is used to provide secure communication for web browsing, e-mail, internet faxing and other data transfers. It is the successor of Secure Socket Layer (SSL).

Though there are subtle differences between both SSL 3.0 and TLS 1.0. , the protocol remains same. The term TLS applies to both the protocols. The TLS protocols facilitate client/ server applications to communicate in a way to prevent message forgery. TLS also provides end point authentication and communication privacy over the internet. This is possible with the use of cryptography.

Only the server is authenticated and the client is unauthenticated. In other words, only the identity of the server is ensured. So the end user whether a person or an application can be sure about the person or application to whom they are communicating. For mutual authentication, public key infrastructure deployment to clients is required.
