Security protocols

Security protocols are known by many names. They are also known as cryptographic protocols, encryption protocols etc. It refers to an abstract or concrete protocol that uses cryptographic methods for performing security related functions. Generally protocols describe how algorithms should be used. If a protocol is said to be detailed, it should include details of data structure, representations etc

Security protocols are commonly used for secure application level data transport. A cryptographic protocol should include several aspects like key agreement, entity authentication, non-repudiation methods etc The example can be Transport Layer Security (TLS). It uses a key exchange called as Diffie-Hellman key exchange. This cryptographic protocol is used to secure web connections.

There are also other types of cryptographic protocols. There are cryptographic application protocols which often use one or more underlying key agreement methods. At times, cryptographic application protocols are often called as cryptographic protocols. Cryptographic protocols are verified formally at times, on an abstract level.
