Secure Sockets Layer

Secure Sockets Layer or SSL refers to an application layer protocol that manages the message transmission security in a network. Both the public and private key encryption is used in SSL. It is widely used in the management of the message transmission security in the internet.

The successor for SSL is TLS or Transport Layer Security. TLS is also based on SSL. A program layer located between the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) and Transport Control Protocol (TCP) is used by SSL.

SSL forms an important part of both Microsoft and Netscape browsers and other web server products. SSL is developed by Netscape. It is also supported by Microsoft and other Internet client / server developers. The components "Sockets" in the term refer to a method of passing data. The public and private key encryption system and digital certificate is used by SSL. SSL and TLS form important parts of most of the web browsers and web servers.
