Port forwarding

Port forwarding is sometimes called as tunneling. It refers to the act of forwarding a network port from one network to another. The major feature of this technique is it allows an outside user to reach a port on a private IP address within a LAN. He can access the port from the outside through a NAT enabled router. Moreover, port forwarding allows all the remote computers to get access to a specific computer within a private LAN.

SHOUTcast streaming can be achieved by forwarding port 8000 on the router to a user's machine .Similarly forwarding ports 5000 through 6000 to a user's machine facilitates the use of unreal tournament . Port forwarding is generally used with single machine.

It is possible to use port forwarding within a single machine. This is usually done on unix- derived computers in which port numbers that are numbered below 1024 can only be accessed by soft ware running as the root user.
