Packet switching

Packet switching refers to a computer networking and telecommunication terminology. In this communication paradigm, packets are routed between nodes over data links shared with other traffic.

Packet switching is in direct contrast to another communication paradigm called circuit switching. This concept is independently introduced by two people. They were Paul Baran and Donald Davies . Internet is well-known for the use of packet switching. There are various data link protocols and the internal protocol suite is used by the internet. Examples can be Ethernet and Frame relay.

Some of the recent mobile phone technologies such as GPRS, I-mode etc use packet switching. Since packet switching does not establish any connections, it is also called as connectionless networking. There is also a technique in packet switching called fast packet switching which is used to increase the throughput by eliminating overhead. The world's first packet switched network is called as ARPANET.
