Open VPN

Open VPN refers to a kind of virtual private network package designed for creating point-to-point encrypted tunnels between host computers . It was introduced by James Yonan. It facilitates friends to use a preshared private key, certificates or username/ password. It helps to authenticate each other in this way. It makes use of the openSSL encryption library and SSLv3/TLSv1 protocol to its fullest.

It is offered on Linux , xBSD, Mac OS X and windows 2000 /XP . It provides security and various control features. It is not a web-based VPN and is also not compatible with IPsec or any other kind of VPN package. The whole package comprises of one binary for both client and server connections, an optional configuration file and other key files based on the authentication method used.

OpenVPN uses OpenSSL library for offering encryption of the data and control channels. OpenSSL does the encryption and authentication work and Open VPN uses all the ciphers available in the Open SSL package. It also uses the HMAC packet authentication feature to provide more security to the connection.
