Network Security Services

Network Security Services (NSS) refers to a set of libraries intended to support cross- platform development of security -enabled client and server applications. It provides a complete open- source implementation of crypto libraries. NSSL includes a framework where the developers contribute patches like assembler code for optimizing performance on their platforms.

NSS makes use of Netscape Portable Runtime (NSPR). It is a platform -neutral open source API for system function. It is intended for allowing cross-platform developments. NSPR has also been tested in various products like NSS. NSS includes an extensive documents that includes a range of introductory materials, API references, sample code etc NSS is available as both source and shared libraries.

NSS provides security tools for debugging, diagnostics, certificate, key management, cryptography module management and various other development tasks. Similarly, the NSS software crypto module has been validated thrice for conforming to security levels 1 and 2. NSS is also the first open source cryptographic library to get FIPS 140 validation.
