Securing business networks the VPN way!

In an era witnessed by increasing instances of data theft and unreliable data transfer technologies VPN comes as a foolproof solution. Virtual Private Network, better known as VPN is a reliable, private and secure method to share business communications offering great flexibility with reduced costs. The popularity of VPN can be attributed to the secure connectivity it offers and the ability to configure and manage it without any trouble even in mobile platforms. Differing from the traditional methods of data transfers which were cost sensitive and time consuming, VPN enables remote access with separate access rights for individuals alongside secure communication.

VPN enables the internet, which is a public network, to be used privately. VPN uses access technologies like Cable, DSL (Digital Subscriber Lines) and Broadband wireless which offers high bandwidth at an affordable rate. The data transferred by Business houses, both big and small, is often under the threat of getting intercepted and manipulated. The data could eventually fall into the wrong hands or may get lost forever. Effective methods to ensure the integrity and confidentiality of Data exist in VPN. Data can be transferred as encrypted messages and hash values which can be deciphered only by the sender and the receiver to read the content. The existence of Authentication mechanisms makes sure that recognized senders and devices enter the virtual private network. Passwords, Digital certificates, Biometrics and smart cards enables authentication. These facilities ensure that the data exchanged is secure or not.

Traditionally, data transferring methods involved workers to go to offices or branch offices to access the network resources. This was a limitation since it resulted in rise in cost as the distance between offices increased. With the arrival of VPN services there is a decrease in the cost involved in communication that enhances web marketing and service supports. VPN enables network access at anytime and anyplace with access rights for separate individuals. As a result employees could perform their job functions with greater flexibility and lesser response time. This not only improves the productivity but also creates a sure chance to enhance the business networks.

Remote Access VPN and Site to site VPN are the two main types of VPN technology. Site to site VPN connects geographically separated locations. Each site in this network uses a gateway such routers, security appliances or firewalls. These gateways are configured with the correct authentication or integrity requirements. Security measure are applied and removed when required. Remote access VPN is tailor made for global business users. For Remote access VPN to work, VPN software has to be installed on the input device i.e. the mobile or the laptop. When the mobile user moves from city to city the network too follows as it is configured on the VPN client software on the mobile device.

VPN software can be chosen according to the need of one’s business. VPN hardware such as routers, ports and configurations are provided by companies like CISCO, AT&T, ALCATEL, INTEL and IBM. Software providers are 3com, OPENVPN, ALONWEB etc. Go ahead and secure your business network!
